Throughout this school year, all grade 9, 10, and 11 students will be completing a Portfolio. The completed Portfolio is required in order for students to be awarded their ELA credit and will be assessed by a group of teachers, led by each student's advisor. Starting in October, we will be meeting with students in advisor groups to outline the expectations for Portfolios and assist them in developing an understanding of how they can be successful. These meetings will evolve into opportunities for kids to complete their work with assistance from their advisor. Meetings will continue throughout the year until the first round of assessments take place. Students who are in their first year of the process will have until May to complete their portfolios while students in year two will have until April to finish. Students who have not met the requirements will be advised on how to correct the problem and will then have until mid June to complete and re-submitt their portfolio. Those students that exceed the mandatory requirements will be awarded an Honourable Mention for their efforts.
CONNECTIONS TO SCHOOL AND DIVISIONAL GOALS
The Carman Collegiate Mission states that our students "will grow and develop holistically through a combination and variety of curricular, co-curricular, and leadership learning opportunities that ultimately prepares them for a responsible, productive and successful life path guided by respect for themselves, others and the environment."
The Portfolio project will allow students to share their growth and development while valuing personal interests and abilities. It will help build self-awareness in students so that they can seek out opportunities to fulfill their goals.
The Prairie Rose School Division Vision Statement states;
"The educational setting of our schools will reflect the following:
Learners emotionally invested in their learning;
Learners actively engaged and reflective in their learning;
Learners constructing their own learning;"
The Portfolio Project is based on meeting these aims. It is based on reflective thinking and allows students to construct meaning out of their learning experiences.
